GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

FEBRUARY 2009

As you all know by now, January was a major turning point in the history of this Council. As you can read elsewhere in this issue, we are now embarked on a positive, energizing mission of acquiring a new hall for this Council that will meet all our needs, fraternal as well as charitable and spiritual.

But I would like to express in this message how incredibly moved I was at the fraternal unity that emerged at January’s meeting. No one knows better than those who have worked on these hall committees for over two years how important Columbus and Marian Halls are to so many members of our Council. There has been an enormous amount of sweat and commitment that has gone into making this our home for almost fifty years, and the emotional ties are quite rightfully very strong. However, more significantly, there was no better expression on January 12th of the true spirit, unity and fraternity of the Knights of Columbus shown by those senior members of the Council, most of them Past Grand Knights and dedicated past members of the Council and OCA executives, who stood up to express their support and confidence for moving forward on this issue. I tip my chapeau to them. Thank you – I can’t sufficiently express what your statement of support means.

Thank you also to PGK Denis Celej and brothers James Mendez, Conor Boyd and Richard Moreau who were the mainstays of our Christmas programs, and to all others who supported them.

Our work goes on. The incredibly vicious calamity that hit Haiti now commands our focus. I would ask you to join me in a special thanks to PGK and FDD Denis Ross for jump-starting Marian Council’s Haiti Appeal. At this writing this emergency fund is approaching $20,000 that will be matched by the Canadian government. It is this type of initiative that makes us all proud to be members of this Order. The need continues – please give generously!
